Honoring A Real Life Superhero
Patrick Taylor is remembered as a firefighter, veteran, father, husband – and is best described as a “superhero”. When Patrick was diagnosed with Stage 4 Multiple Sclerosis, he transformed his pain into a Greater Purpose of helping others. He began rigorously training in his wheelchair for the Olympics (some days 15 miles at a time). During his “rolls”, Patrick made the rounds to local charity events donating whatever items he could carry on his lap. During one of his rolls, Patrick met Lauren Burgoyne who was working as a television news reporter in Tucson, Arizona. The two became fast friends. Lauren was moved by Patrick’s perseverance and his ability to transform pain into purpose. She began documenting his story in 2013 and The Greater Purpose documentary was born. Lauren saw the need to highlight everyday heroes like Patrick and witnessed first-hand the impact their stories had on other people. The world lost a hero on January 25, 2015, but that is not where Patrick Taylor's story ends. Patrick inspired Lauren to start The Greater Purpose Project, and his legacy lives on through the schools, youth, and many lives our nonprofit impacts.

Additionally, a portion of our race proceeds support the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Patrick had a special heart for raising awareness, funds and donating to charity events. He attributed his mental health and wellbeing to the MS support group he attended. We are proud to partner with The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, a nonprofit that provides a comprehensive approach to helping people with MS. You can find more information about the Multiple Scleroris Foundation at msfocus.org.
